Rep. Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) speaks at EPA forum in Willowbrook on November 29th.

“I want to thank every single person in this room for being here. It is because of your presence here that we are finally starting to drive some answers. I am a scientist. I am a lawyer. It is critically important that we focus on getting the most accurate up to date, scientifically proven answers to this critical health situation that has effecting all of us.

“In the last few months I have read more than I ever thought I would on ethylene oxide. I have delved into scientific literature all the way back into the 1980s to the present day, both in the US and internationally. As a member of the General Assembly’s environmental committee I have witnessed devastating health effects that have been reported by the residents in this district. I have reviewed ethylene oxide test results from private businesses – that are are finding in their area. I have received heartbreaking letters from constituents about cancer clusters.

“We have other tests and models that have been inconsistent with not only the EO model that the EPA and OSHA have proposed, but other models as well. What has been frustrating for us is that when we try to get to the details we get, ‘I don’t know,’ a bureaucratic runaround, or a bunch of bureaucratic gobbledygook that is not practical advice that we can use to organize our lives.  That is also what has to stop. I hope that we will finally start to get some answers here tonight.

“Leader Durkin and I are here for you, we will continue to advocate for you, as will Senator John Curran, who is also here tonight. Thank you.”
